About data
Freshwater: internal renewable freshwater flows generated inside a country, in cubic metres per person per year (FAO AQUASTAT through World Bank). This is a long-run water-resource indicator, not proof that rivers, lakes or groundwater are safe to drink.
Drinking water: share of people using safely managed drinking-water services (WHO/UNICEF JMP). This requires an improved source on premises, available when needed and free from specified contamination. It does not represent all locally available water.
Water stress: freshwater withdrawals as a percentage of available renewable freshwater resources (FAO AQUASTAT); reported values may exceed 100%. Not a direct measure of taps running dry.
Rivers and lakes: Natural Earth 1:50m cartography. The shown lines are geographic features, not potable supply locations; the dataset is not a complete network of every stream, aquifer, reservoir or treatment facility.
Desalination: geolocated named facilities catalogued in Wikidata, not a complete global plant census. Symbols are the same size because neither current treated output nor reliable comparable capacity is provided. An item can be historic or under construction. The pins do not establish that the plant is currently producing drinking water.
All country figures are individually year-labelled (mostly 2022 freshwater and 2024 drinking-water access). Missing indicators remain missing rather than being invented.
Internal renewable resources, not directly drinkable water.
