About the estimate

Based on WorldPop's modelled 2025 residential population, not the people physically present today. Smaller areas use the original fine-grid API. Large areas use a local WorldPop-derived coarse 40–50 km grid for a faster estimate; settlements near the border may be included or omitted.

You can draw regions as large as countries or former empires. Large-area counts are less precise than local counts, and an error is shown rather than fabricated data if the global grid fails to load. Some sparsely populated or polar regions lack original coverage.
